How to Size an LED Video Wall: The Half-Meter Math Formula.

Transitioning from projectors to LED panels changes the entire mathematical foundation of your stage. Stop overpaying for pixel pitch, learn how to calculate modular tile configurations, and discover why you can't just order a "16-foot screen."

For decades, sizing a screen for a corporate event was a relatively straightforward exercise involving projector throw distances and canvas heights. But as high-end live event production rapidly shifts toward modular technology, event planners are running into a new, highly technical barrier.

You cannot approach an LED video wall rental the same way you approach a projector. LED screens are not made of fabric; they are built by linking together dozens—or hundreds—of individual square tiles.

In our experience executing premium corporate event production setups, the biggest mistake planners make with LED is ordering the wrong Pixel Pitch. If you get it wrong, your audience will either be staring at a blurry grid of dots, or you will overspend your AV budget by $15,000 on resolution you didn't actually need.

Concept 1: The "Rule of 10" for Pixel Pitch

When you rent a traditional projector screen, resolution is dictated by the projector lens. With LED walls, the resolution is physically built into the hardware, measured as Pixel Pitch.

Pixel pitch is the exact distance (measured in millimeters) between the center of one LED diode to the center of the diode next to it. A 1.9mm pitch means the pixels are incredibly close together (high resolution). A 3.9mm pitch means they are further apart (lower resolution).

How do you choose? You must base it entirely on your Minimum Viewing Distance—the distance from the screen to the very first row of your audience. If an attendee sits too close to a high pixel pitch (like 3.9mm), their eyes will resolve the individual dots, making the image look like a pixelated video game.

To solve this, AV engineers use the Rule of 10 (or the 3-foot rule):

The Formula:
For every 1 millimeter of pixel pitch, your audience must sit at least 3.28 feet (1 meter) away to see a smooth, seamless image.

  • 1.9mm Pitch: Audience can sit ~6.5 feet away (Great for close-up breakout rooms or broadcast cameras).
  • 2.9mm Pitch: Audience must sit ~10 feet away (The gold standard for corporate general sessions).
  • 3.9mm Pitch: Audience must sit ~13+ feet away (Best for stages where the audience is pushed far back).

Don't Buy Resolution You Don't Need

Lower pixel pitches cost significantly more to rent because they contain millions of additional diodes. If your front row is 20 feet away from the stage, renting a premium 1.9mm wall is a massive waste of budget. A 2.9mm or even 3.9mm wall will look completely identical to an audience sitting that far back. Let distance dictate your spend.

Concept 2: Half-Meter Modular Math

With projector screens, you can order a standard 16' x 9' frame. With LED, you cannot order exact, round-number imperial sizes. Commercial LED video walls are constructed using individual square or rectangular tiles (called cabinets), and almost the entire global manufacturing industry builds these tiles in metrics.

The global standard LED panel size is exactly 500mm x 500mm (roughly 1.64 feet x 1.64 feet).

To size your wall, you must stop thinking in feet and start thinking in "columns and rows" of panels. If you want a screen that is roughly 16 feet wide, you have to divide by 1.64.

16 feet ÷ 1.64 feet = 9.75 panels.

Since you cannot rent three-quarters of an LED panel, you have to round up to 10 panels. Therefore, your wall will actually be 16.4 feet wide (10 panels wide).

To achieve a perfect 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, you would build the wall 10 panels wide by 5.5 panels high—but again, you can't have half a panel. So you build it 10 panels wide by 6 panels high. This gives you a physical dimension of 16.4' W x 9.8' H, which yields an aspect ratio of roughly 1.67:1 (close enough to 16:9 that standard video fills it beautifully).

This is what a standard "16-foot" LED wall actually looks like under the hood. It is built using 60 individual half-meter (500mm) square cabinets locked together.

Concept 3: Nits vs. Lumens

When dealing with projectors, brightness is measured in Lumens (the amount of light reflected off the screen). With LED video walls, brightness is measured in Nits (the amount of light emitted directly by the diodes).

Because LED walls produce their own light, they are incredibly bright and virtually immune to ambient room lighting. This makes them the ultimate solution for daytime events, glass-walled atriums, and outdoor festivals.

  • Indoor LED Walls: Typically output between 800 and 1,200 Nits. For a standard ballroom, you will likely run the wall at only 30% to 50% brightness; otherwise, it will blind the audience and blow out the cameras.
  • Outdoor LED Walls: Must output 4,000 to 5,500 Nits to cut through direct sunlight. Outdoor panels are also weatherproofed (IP65 rated), which makes them significantly heavier.

Concept 4: Weight, Rigging, and Power Constraints

While an LED wall solves all of your brightness and shadow-casting problems, it introduces a completely new set of logistical challenges that planners must account for in their budgets.

1. The Weight Factor

A standard 16.4' x 9.8' LED wall (60 panels) weighs over 1,000 pounds, not including the steel truss and motors required to lift it. You cannot simply throw an LED wall up in any venue. If you plan to "fly" the wall, the venue's structural ceiling points must be rated to handle the massive load. If you ground-support it, the heavy metal ballast blocks will require 3 to 5 feet of backstage footprint to keep the wall from tipping over.

2. Massive Power Draw

Unlike a projector that plugs into a standard wall outlet, a large LED wall draws a tremendous amount of electricity. That same 60-panel wall will easily require three to four dedicated 20-amp circuits. For massive arena walls, AV companies will require the venue to provide three-phase power drops directly into the room, which venues will charge a premium for.

Calculate Your Custom Resolution

Because you are building a custom screen size, your screen's resolution will not be standard 1920x1080 (1080p). To find your true pixel resolution, divide your physical wall width in millimeters by your pixel pitch.

Example: A 5-meter wide wall (5000mm) divided by a 2.9mm pitch = a horizontal resolution of exactly 1,724 pixels. You will need to provide this exact dimension to your graphic designers so they can build PowerPoint templates that perfectly map to the wall without stretching.
